Maureen Whiting
Maureen Whiting is a choreographer, dancer and mathematician living and performing in Seattle. She is the founder and artistic director of the Maureen Whiting Company. Maureen has been commissioned to create new choreographic works at On the Boards Contemporary Performance Theater from 1998-2006, at Seattle University since 2004, at New City Theatre, and ACT Theatre in Seattle. Her solo work has been performed in Seattle and in New York City. She has been commissioned for choreography by Cornish College of the Arts, Velocity, Miro Dance Theatre in Philadelphia, and Alaska Dance Theatre. Maureen has created and performed original work in Europe in collaboration with a Frankfort Ballet Company dancer on their shared "Skinkadance" project. She works regularly with dancers from the Pacific Northwest Ballet in Seattle. Maureen choreographed and co-directed original film and video projects which were shown at New Dance/New Cinema, Lincoln Center Library in New York as part of Dance on Camera, in Seattle's Northwest Film Forum and Velocity's Next Festival. Maureen was granted a creative music residency in 2002 at Jack Straw Productions. The company participated in the Seventh Rencontres Choréographiques Internationales de Seine-Saint Denis (The Bagnolet Festival)in Los Angeles in 2000. The Maureen Whiting Company receives support from 4Culture, Mayors Office of Arts and Cultural Affairs, Paul Allen Family Foundation, Microsoft Corporation, as well as generous private donations. The Company has been featured on KTCS Channel 9, The Seattle Times, The Seattle P.I., The Stranger, Seattle Weekly, and Seattle Magazine. Maureen graduated with a degree in Mathematics in 1989 from Smith College and tutors mathematics. She actively pursues collaborations with visual artists, composers, and performers to explore the creative structures between artistic mediums and expand the boundaries of live dance performance.
